Why Is My Child Slow at Mental Math? (And What Most Parents Get Wrong)

Many parents notice this early:

👉 Their child takes a long time to solve simple questions like:
38 + 16
9 + 7

While adults can answer instantly, children:

Count slowly
Use fingers
Get stuck
And the common thought is:

“Is my child just not good at math?”

The truth is:

👉 Most children are not “bad at math”
👉 They just haven’t built strong number foundations yet

Mental math speed is NOT about intelligence.

It comes from:

Number sense
Pattern recognition
Understanding how numbers break apart

What’s actually happening

When a child solves: 9 + 7

Instead of seeing:
👉 9 + 7 = 10 + 6

They may:
👉 Count 1 by 1

This shows:
👉 They don’t yet see relationships between numbers

Why this matters

Without this foundation:

Children may:
❌ Be slow in class
❌ Make “careless mistakes”
❌ Lose confidence over time

And this is where many parents feel:
👉 “They’re trying… but not improving”

What actually helps

Instead of more practice…

Children need:
âś” To see number patterns
âś” To understand number bonds
âś” To build thinking, not memorising

Importance of diagnostic

But here’s the challenge:

👉 Many parents find it hard to pinpoint exactly where the gap is

That’s why I created a simple Math Level Check

It helps you:
✔ Identify your child’s actual level
âś” See where the gaps are
âś” Know what to focus on

👉 Want to know your child’s real math level?

Take this quick 5–10 minute check:

Soft bridge to Our Little Scholars Math Program
For parents who want more structured support:

I also run a program that helps children:
âś” Build strong math foundations
âś” Develop number sense step-by-step
âś” Gain confidence in problem-solving

If your child is struggling with speed or confidence in math…

👉 It’s not about working harder
👉 It’s about building the right foundation
