Why Your Child Understands Math in Class… But Can’t Do It Alone

(And what most parents misunderstand about “understanding”)

Many parents tell me this:

👉 “My child understands when the teacher explains…
but cannot do the questions on their own.”

It can feel confusing.

Because during class:
✔ They seem to follow
✔ They nod along
✔ They even say “I understand”

But when they try alone?

❌ They get stuck
❌ They hesitate
❌ They don’t know where to start

What’s really happening

Here’s the truth:

👉 Listening is NOT the same as understanding

When a teacher explains step-by-step,
the child is following — not necessarily thinking.

It feels clear in the moment…

But the understanding is not fully built yet.

A simple way to see it

Think of it like this:

👉 Watching someone solve a problem
vs
👉 Solving it yourself

Very different.

In class:
→ The brain is recognising patterns

At home:
→ The brain must recall, decide, and apply

And that’s where the gap shows.

Common signs you might notice

You may see your child:

Gets stuck on the first step

Keeps asking, “What do I do next?”

Needs hints to continue

Cannot explain their thinking

Solves similar questions differently each time

👉 These are NOT signs of laziness

👉 These are signs that understanding is still developing

Why more practice doesn’t fix it

Many parents respond by giving more practice.

But if the foundation is unclear:

❌ More practice = more confusion

❌ More mistakes = more frustration

❌ Confidence starts to drop

What children actually need

Instead of just doing more…

Children need:

✔ Clear understanding of why

✔ Strong number sense

✔ Step-by-step thinking skills

✔ Opportunities to think independently

What I focus on in my teaching

In my lessons, I focus on helping children:

👉 Move from “following” to “thinking”

👉 Explain their reasoning clearly

👉 Solve problems confidently on their own

Because that’s when real improvement happens.

 Importance of diagnostic

👉 Want to know if your child truly understands — or is just following?

Take this quick 5–10 minute Math Level Check:

It helps you:

✔ Identify your child’s actual level
✔ See where they get stuck
✔ Know exactly what to focus on next
